No matter how many time the shortcut is pressed, the system wakes up immediately via the keyboard shortcut.
The system never suspends. It is as if the same key is also waking up the system at the same time. It turns, that the USB controller is indeed mapping the resume function to the keyboard in some way by default because the system will also wake up by pressing any key on the keyboard.
The image above shows a different system, not the one we are working with. This was to avoid reconfiguring a system that had already been fixed. But the point to note is that some devices are labeled enabled while others are labeled disabled. Enabled status means that device will wake up the system when triggered. Disabled means the device has no effect, and the system will remain in its suspended state.
All S-states in the listing above are S4, which represent hibernation. S3 states are what we what, and they handle the suspend mode. This is the power button. When pressed, it will wake up the system. Press the suspend keyboard shortcut to suspend the system. The system should suspend and look like it has been turned off no fans, no power lights, no activity, blank monitor. Things might not work out properly depending upon the hardware. The system might resume but the monitor stays blank without any way to turn it back on short of a hardware reset.
The system might not wakeup at all requiring a hardware reset. Anything could happen. If so, there might be other issues involved that are preventing proper resumption. These are beyond the scope of advice offered here and will require investigation.
For the given issue, I have found the solution presented here to be sufficient and reliable for my hardware. Of course, the keyboard no longer resumes the system like before, by that is fine. So I kept using it but then again in about a month it happened again. I updated the kernel again, it went away.
Then today morning it happened again. Something is stopping the system from falling into sleep. So I looked in to syslog and looked for logs around the time the wake up happened to see if there is any error logged there. The only thing that seemed wrong are those Broke affinity for irq X lines. So I started looking around with that line as key phrase. And found a way to fix this. These are the components that have or not to wake your device up from sleep.

Killing the X server will start a new login session and do a full reset of the graphics if it's the graphics that's hung up. You can also try to pull up a terminal with ctrl-alt-fN and then return to the GUI which might bring it back. If it looks like it started to resume and you close the lid again, does the LED go back into suspend? If this is the case, ssh should work when the lid is up and that would be the best way to see what's happening.
This could help narrow down the problem. It generates quite a bit of noise when suspending and resuming. If it fails to boot, wait a few minutes before power cycling so that anything waiting on timeouts might leave a log trace.
There could also be something slowing down the resume by waiting on a timeout, so try waiting 10 minutes or so before giving up on the resume and if it does resume, the logs should point you in the right direction. One of the typical problems is that instead of suspend it attempts to hibernate. In order to hibernate it requires that at least you have as much swap memory available as RAM you have. Can you check what's your configuration with:. When that happens, can you still ping the laptop, or SSH into it from another computer in the same network?.
What is your video card, and have you installed special video drivers?. Technically, the laptop wouldn't even make it into suspend when I closed the lid and would require a hard reboot once the lid was re-opened. My solution was actually very simple - I was still using the default x-org display driver. My old Dell uses an Nvidia video chip - switching to the nVidia video driver and a reboot completely resolved my suspend issue.
